Volunteer Interest Form
Join us to protect George Mason University's campus environment by volunteering to remove invasive weeds from the Necklace Stream Restoration site!
Complete the volunteer interest form to collect interest and availability for volunteer opportunities. We will schedule cleanup days based on volunteer availability and good weather — not too hot, not raining — to make the volunteer experience safer and more comfortable for all.
We will only schedule volunteer opportunities on weekdays (Monday to Friday) for the selected time period noted in the form. Once we have collected responses and identified overlapping availability among volunteers, we’ll reach out to confirm the final cleanup dates and provide additional details — including where to meet, what to bring, and tips for a smooth experience. We'll aim to select 2–3 days for this effort — so we’ll be looking for volunteers whose availability aligns. Each cleanup will be just 1 hour due to high temperatures.
Please note: This opportunity is for those who are genuinely interested and flexible enough to show up on a short notice because cleanup days depend heavily on weather (avoiding extreme heat or rain)
What you’ll be doing:
- Removing tall invasive species (like cattails)
- Preventing harmful plants from spreading into the Mason Pond
- Helping maintain the stream's health and improving biodiversity
- Light physical work near the stream: pulling weeds and bagging waste
- Promoting environmental responsibility through action
Tools & Gear:
We’ll provide boots, gloves, and waders. Equipment will be distributed on site.
Why it matters:
George Mason University is part of the MS4 stormwater program, and it’s our responsibility to keep the Necklace Stream clean and healthy. Removing invasive weeds prevents pollution, protects water quality, and keeps our stormwater system functioning properly.
