Space Management
In coordination with Facilities, the Registrar’s Office, and Real Estate, the Space Management works with campus Units to develop space need projections, occupancy guidelines, process space assignment requests, and compile space data reports for regulatory compliance, utilization, data validation, and capital project planning. Space Management maintains an accurate inventory of data use which is validated through periodic space surveys and coordination with Unit Space Liaisons. Space Management participates in campus initiatives and planning studies relating to space use, the Revenue and Cost Allocation Model, and works closely with the Department’s Campus Planners and Facilities in support of new construction and renovation projects.
Space Management is:
- The management of space as a resource
- The allocation of new space
- The reassignment of existing space
- The policies and procedures to ensure maximum use of space
- The planning process for major capital projects
- The strategy by which space needs are met for future growth
- The maintenance of space-related data
Space Liaisons
Space Liaisons serve as the primary points of contact between their department or college and the university's space management program. Working within the space database of record, Space Liaisons are responsible for reviewing and validating the space data assigned to their unit — including room assignments, department occupancy records, and functional use classifications. They submit space change requests when rooms are reassigned, repurposed, or vacated, and they participate in periodic space audits to ensure the database reflects actual conditions on the ground. By maintaining accurate records in the space database of record, Space Liaisons help the university make informed decisions about space allocation, capital planning, and compliance reporting to the Commonwealth.
