The extraordinarily rapid growth
of George Mason University in the last three
decades is accompanied by an increased demand
for on-campus student housing and support
services as the University expands its
educational mission. The Northeast Sector
Development (NESD) project is an integral part
of a master plan that will enable continued
growth of this world-class campus.
At $75M, Northeast Sector Development is the
University's largest construction project to
date. Planned and executed as a design-build
effort, the 450,000 SF mixed-use development
consists of:
- Five
multistory residence buildings, at 5 to 6
floors each, supporting a total of 1,030 beds.
-
Exhibition-style dining facility with a
capacity to seat over 500 diners.
- Fitness
center with cardio, weight training, and
indoor basketball and racquetball courts.
- Retail
operations that will include a coffee
house/convenience store and wood-fired pizza
and pasta restaurant.
-
Various recreation and office spaces.
NESD will also extend and
relocate utility infrastructure critical to
current university operations and required for
future growth. This scope includes high
temperature hot water and chilled water
distribution systems and communication systems. |

Chesapeake River Way is now
closed to routine deliveries. Routine deliveries
that use Chesapeake River Way to access North
Chesapeake, South Chesapeake, and Fenwick
Library will now be required to use the lot in
front of Finley building as the closest point of
vehicular approach.

There is no direct vehicle
or pedestrian access to the North and South
Chesapeake modules as Chesapeake River Way will
be closed to non-construction traffic. The
construction gate at Patriot Circle will be
locked. This affects student access to the
Registrar, Financial Aid and Student Accounts.
Pedestrian routes from central campus will not
change. However, the closest accessible parking
will be in the lot north of the Finley Building
and in the SUB I lot. Most student transactions
can be handled remotely through Patriot Web
self-service, phone or FAX. In person
transactions for those students who cannot
physically access the North and South Chesapeake
modules will be facilitated by the Disability
Resource Center. Students who need assistance
should contact Ms. Debbie Wyne, Disability
Resource Center, at 703 993-2474. |

As of July 31, 2007, Dustin Construction, Inc. of Gaithersburg, Maryland was 77% complete based on $61,010,936 of design and construction work in place. Building A/B (360 beds) was occupied under a temporary Certificate of Occupancy issued on August 17, 2007. Work is progressing well on Building C/D (354 beds) which is scheduled for delivery on January 10, 2008. Work on the dining/fitness facility is well underway although behind the original schedule due to design and permit issues. |
